Eric Adams blasted on X for claiming NYC known as 'Port-Au-Prince of America'

While offering support to the people of Haiti on Wednesday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams claimed that the Big Apple was known as "the Port-Au-Prince of America."

X users were quick to fact-check his assertion, and before long, a community note was added to his post pointing out that he was the only one who is known to have called it that.

"We call New York City the Port-Au-Prince of America," Adams wrote. "We feel the pain our Haitian neighbors feel as the situation grows dire. To the people of Haiti and our own Haitian community here in New York City, know that we stand with you today and always."

"I've never heard anyone, anywhere, at any time, call NYC the Port-au-Prince of America," one user responded.

"Who the f*ck has ever said that?" another said.

The original community note stated that "no one calls New York City the Port-Au-Prince of America," but it was later amended after users discovered that Adams had, on one occasion, referred to it as such.

"Important context: no one other than Eric Adams has called NYC the 'Port-Au-Prince of America," the new note reads.

A January Instagram post commemorating the earthquake that ravaged the island nation fourteen years ago appears to be the first time Adams used the nickname.

Aside from being located next to water, the two cities have very little in common.

The comments from Adams come at a time when there is an anticipated mass migration of Haitians coming to the US due to civil unrest in the country. Gangs have taken over Haiti’s government and Pentagon officials have shed light on the fact that many may end up emigrating to the US.

Adams, for his part, has taken heat for how he has handled the illegal immigrant crisis in New York City and has also said the sanctuary city cannot handle anymore illegal immigration.
